Abandoned Cities

I was listening to a podcast tonight in the gym on abandoned cities.  The piece was put together by the people at How Stuff Works.com.  You can read a little about it here.

That brought me to a really cool website called ForgottenDetroit.com.  I don't know much about Detroit but now I want to go there and check it out.

Two things near and dear to my heart.

First, my family is from Detroit. I was born there during the post MLK killing race riots. The story of police escorts, mom being locked down in a black hospital, dad not visiting, etc. etc. are family legend.

But we frequently went back and visited Detroit until a few years ago when the last relative finally left. To watch the city fall into decline was like watching some strange science experiment gone bad. Every place my mom and dad had worked was abandoned, turned into a squat, or just left to rot. The hotel they had their wedding reception in was on your list.

Every trip back got more and more depressing.

Second- I once took a bus from Georgia to California, and passed through Texas. One of the strangest parts of the entire trip were the abandoned cities spread throughout Texas. Many of them had architecture, signs and other things that placed them as being inhabited in the past 15 years...but not a single soul for a hundred miles around. Creepy.
