I got an e-mail from the wife of a former Woodland Police officer. She brought up the lack of a Police Officers Memorial in Yolo County.  If we have one I am not sure where it is.  Do we have one?

She provided this link to something being done in Sacramento County.

I know of the following officers that have lost their lives on duty in Yolo County ---

Woodland Police Department -- Officer Laurence Sills. I believe this was a motorcycle accident.

CHP - Officer Stevens, the car accident on the I-5/113 interchange, Officers Blecher and Freeman that were murdered when I was in third grade, and Officer Ivan Casselman

Davis Police Department -- Officer Cantrill.

West Sacramento Police Department -- not aware of any.  Thank God.

Winters PD - not aware of any. Thank God.

Yolo County Sheriff -- Deputy Diaz last month and Deputy Walter Leinberger in 1943.

I don't think I am the natural person to lead this effort but I do think a memorial would be appropriate.  What do you think?

Here is some information on one that was done in Palm Springs.

Okay, maybe I'm a jerk...but I do not understand the public adoration of police/fire.

Being a cop or fireman is a decent job. The job can have some MAJOR highs/lows, but they get paid well, and there are some perks.

The competition for these jobs is intense. Hundreds of people will line up for a single position. It's not like they are jobs that nobody wants. Or something you get drafted to do.

Are the jobs dangerous? Well, it's all relative.

How many farm workers will die in the Central Valley this year from heat exhaustion..or getting run over by giant machines with rotating blades?

More than the number of cops who will die on the job.

Just sayin'....
