Twinkies
Friday, July 31, 2009 :: 0 Comments
If Dr. Hinton reads this blog --- please don't continue with this entry.

More than 10 years ago a friend of mine gave me a box of twinkies as a gag gift.  I still have it.  Tonight I got it down from one of the top shelves in the kitchen -- Jenn is happy to see it out of her kitchen.

My test was to see if twinkies really could last for a long time and still be fresh.

The box on the front says that it is best if sold before Oct 02.  I know I had this box in 1999 but I am not sure exactly when.

I just walked down to the Nugget to try and buy a "fresh" box of twinkies but got there at 10:01pm and the doors were locked.

My idea is to give Jenn the blind taste test.  I will blindfold her and see if she can figure out which twinkie is more than a decade old and which one is Nugget fresh. Of course I would videotape this for everyone to see. My guess is that she is going to get it right.

Looking for other suggestions on what to do with the Twinkies.

The web is full of Twinkie experiments.

Infant Child Care
Friday, July 31, 2009 :: 0 Comments
I am trying to help a new Woodland resident find infant child care over by Tafoya School.  If any of you know someone that has a spot available please send me an e-mail at matt@rexroad.com.

Jenn was my go to player on this.  She knows all on this sort of stuff.

Interesting one today.  Had a lady call that wanted a 2009 phone book.

I was just thinking the other day about how I get all these phone books on my front door and I never use them.  Phone book will be in her mailbox by COB.

Arthritis
Thursday, July 30, 2009 :: 0 Comments
I am looking to help an old Woodland friend identify some people that might like to serve on the board of the Arthritis Foundation.  It appears from what I have read that one out of every five people is directly impacted by this health problem.

If you are interested in serving or know someone else that might be interested please let me know.

My e-mail is matt@rexroad.com. My phone number is 530-662-5184.

An imporant question
Thursday, July 30, 2009 :: 1 Comments
This article on CNN today was interesting to me.

I tend to be more Libertarian on these sorts of matters.   I don't really like seat belt laws, motorcycle helmet requirements, and all kinds of other forms of nanny government.

Smoking is an interesting one for me. I have never smoked anything.  Not a cigar, cigarette, crack cocaine, or pot.  I really don't like smoking at all.  It is a disgusting thing.

However, who am I to deny an adult from making the decision to smoke? Some people are firm in their convictions that smoking is so bad we need to do whatever we can to stop it -- because it is bad.

Well how about twinkies?  Double cheeseburgers are bad.  In fact, double cheeseburgers for someone extremely overweight everyone would agree is not a good thing. Let's make people take a body fat test at the counter.  If they are more than 25% fat -- "No Burgers (or soup) for You."

If we have come to the conclusion that smoking is bad -- then let's just ban it completely.  While we are at it -- let's just do the same for cheeseburgers and Ho-Hos.  If it is bad we will make it illegal.

Now some of you will say that there is a huge difference since smoking leads to second hand health issues.  Well, then what about unprotected sex?  Let's make it illegal to have unprotected sex unless you have been engaged in a monogamous relationship for more than a year.  That way we will help prevent the spread of some diseases that are spread that way.

I agree that at some point we need to draw a line -- I just think it should be closer to individual freedoms than it is now and certainly will be 10 years from now.
Water with Davis
Wednesday, July 29, 2009 :: 1 Comments
The Big Reason asked a great question about the water meeting last night.  Basically -- what is the issue and what does it mean?

Here is the deal.  Right now Woodland gets 100% of the water it uses from pumping groundwater.  This is not good for a couple reasons.

1) Woodlanders are forced to use water softening that put substances in the water that make it difficult to treat when it become part of the waste stream.

2) Water softening costs money for Woodland residents.

3) The quality of the water coming from the ground is low.

4) It is never good to have only one source for your water supply. Never.  If the aquifer were to get compromised Woodland would be in big trouble.

So this is what the option is.  Woodland has applied for a surface water allocation from the Sacramento River. This water is of much better quality than anything we pump out of the ground.

So the question is -- how do we get the water from the Sacramento River to Woodland?

It will be very expensive.  However, since Davis and UC Davis have a similar application for surface water in we can work together on the infrastructure to get it here.  So we will run one diversion point off the river and one pipe west from the river heading west. At some point it will branch off toward Woodland and toward Davis.

This could provide us with water about eight months a year. In the summer with other demands on the river water we would need to pump like we do now.  The aquaifer would probably improve over time making even this water better.

So the City of Woodland and City of Davis would have a Joint Powers Authority to govern this system.  That is what they talked about last night.
Wow - Don Saylor
Tuesday, July 28, 2009 :: 0 Comments
I just got a letter in the mail from Don Saylor announcing his candidacy for Helen Thomson's Supervisor seat.  It is a great letter but that is not what caught my attention.

His list of endorsements is amazing.  He appears to have the entire Woodland, Winters, and West Sacramento City Councils.  Then throw in Senator Wolk, Supervisor Thomson, Supervisor McGowan, Sheriff Prieto, and District Attorney Reisig -- and that is a coalition.

I am also on the list of supporting Saylor.  I have enjoyed working with him since 2002.  He has always been fair with me.  He needs to be a Supervisor. The alternative is not acceptable.

Kind of uncomfortable
Tuesday, July 28, 2009 :: 1 Comments
So I went to Davis tonight for the joint Woodland and Davis City Council meeting.

It appeared to be the perfect time to announce my candidacy for Mayor of Davis.  I pulled out the old tv spot that Webmaster Bob made....see here.

We were all set to make the big announcement until the end.  Have you ever been a guest in a home and have some sort of domestic dispute erupt.  You know, the kind where you want to just climb between the cushions and hide.  Well, at the end of the meeting tonight most of the people from Woodland kind of had one of those moments.

Things were going along fine -- right up until Davis needed to make a motion.  Well, right there in front of all the guests from Woodland ....  Councilwoman Greenwald and Mayor Pro Temp Saylor had a nice little exchange.

So -- campaign for Mayor has been canceled. I think I would rather stay with McGowan and Chamberlain on the Board of Supervisors.
Water tonight in Davis
Tuesday, July 28, 2009 :: 1 Comments
Tonight at 5pm in the Davis City Council chambers there will be a joint meeting of the Woodland and Davis City Councils. It is an important meeting that has the potential to make a huge difference in the quality and quantity of water for residents in both cities.

Meeting starts at 5pm.  I will be there.
If she passes...hire her

Twelve years ago about now I was starting the bar exam.  I walked in knowing that I could not be any more prepared.

I was working full-time when I went to law school and did the Marines as a reservist so I was not a top student in my class.  I always thought that if I could have the time to study I could really do well.  So when it came to the bar exam I was determined to pass the first time and be done with it.

I was focused. Man I was focused.

The exam is pretty terrible for some people.  People were just walking out of it in the middle of the test for all kinds of reasons.  People were having a fit.  I knew what I needed to do and was not going to let anything get in my way.  The ceiling could have fallen down around me but I would have kept going.

So that brings me to Sara Granda.  She is the woman that had a big deal made about not sending in her money on time and having to publicly pressure the bar examiners to allow her to take the test starting today.

Tell you what.  After all of that drama she went through -- if she passes this test we all should hire her.  You have something major like this happen and you can pass that test -- you are the bomb.  Go Sara. Nail that test.  Focus.

Smoke detector
Monday, July 27, 2009 :: 0 Comments
Last night I was sleeping soundly (I always do) when the smoke alarm started beeping at 0415.  After determining that we did not have a fire in our house my immediate concern was not waking either of the kids.  That would be bad. Very bad.

I was really moving to shut that thing off -- whatever it took.  I would have ripped it off the ceiling and thrown it onto College Street if that is what needed to happen.

Over on my FB page I got scolded for not changing the batteries with the clocks.  Right.

This time is had nothing to do with that.  Look at the battery. The bottom just kind of blew out of it. How does that happen?  That is the way I found it in the detector.

Friday Night at the Zoo
Monday, July 27, 2009 :: 0 Comments
On Friday night Abbie and I went to the Sacramento Zoo at around 5:30pm.  We met my brother and my nephew there.  It was part of a camping trip at the zoo.

The only reason I brought my new tent was because Abbie and Ian wanted to be in it.  I would have been find just to bust out the sleeping bags on a tarp and go to sleep.

I swear to you that most of the people there on Friday brought more stuff to spend one night than any member of my unit took to Kuwait in 2003.  You can see some the madness in this picture.

Despite some of the madness we had a great time. The schedule had us starting out with some time in the zoo with only about 50 other people.  It was great. Abbie got to pet a snake and we watched the bongos get fed a snack.

Then we had dinner that was tasty.

After that we went to the amphitheater for some hot chocolate and ice cream.  Abbie got to pet some other animals.

The only thing about the overnight that was crazy was that at about 0145 firecrackers started going off outside of the zoo. All of the animals went nuts.  Abbie didn't even wake up.  I rolled over and wished Sac PD good thoughts -- it is not my job to patrol in the middle of the night anymore.

In the morning we woke up for a tour of the reptile house and a pancake breakfast.  Abbie ate a ton.

I strongly encourage you to consider this outing for kids 5-10.  I am sure my whole family will do it again when Adam is old enough.
Open for business?
Sunday, July 26, 2009 :: 1 Comments
When I speak to young people one of the messages I like to give is about being open for business.

I ask them to look at themselves inside and out to see if they are in a place where they are telling a potential employer, employee, client, vendor, or partner that they are ready for business.  Are they presentable, do they have a bunch of naked picture on their FB page, do they answer their cell phone, do they have an e-mail address that is something like pornking@hotmail.com, or is the ringer on their cell phone have gangsta rap?

When I just went to the Woodland Journal and saw the picture of the murder suspect I thought "what a waste".  What a waste of the life this guy is accused of taking and what a waste the suspect has made of his.  Now, before you start e-mailing me about how the suspect has not been proven guilty of anything - I realize that.  His life is not in a good spot even if he didn't kill someone.

This dude has "CUT THROAT" tattooed across his neck.

He is not open for business. Not even close.

This guy is on parole as it is.  How many people want to hire someone on parole?  How many people want to live near someone on parole? Not very many.

How many people want to be around someone with "Cut Throat" tattooed on his neck?  NONE.  It is always going to be none. (I don't normally type in all caps -- but I am actually yelling here.)

This guy will never be open for business .. and will never will be as long as he has that stupid tattoo on his neck.

Go ahead and complain all you want about me racial profiling or whatever.  If I am in the park with my kids and ANYONE comes walking up with a tattoo like this -- we are leaving.

Interview Questions
Wednesday, July 22, 2009 :: 0 Comments
In the past month or two I have had probably four people make appointments with me at the county and then not show up.  A couple of them have wanted me to appoint them to county commissions.

Clearly, if they don't show up to the interview I don't appoint them.

I just saw this on CNN.com. I wish the people would have showed up and answered questions in the same manner. At least that would have been entertaining.

Read article here.

There is a rumor that one of these answers in from Woodland Vice-Mayor Art Pimentel.  You can guess which one.

General Plan Meetings this week
Sunday, July 19, 2009 :: 0 Comments
The General Plan is close to being complete.

The Board of Supervisors is scheduled to meet on Monday all day, Tuesday starting at noon, and all day Friday.

On Monday the board will take a brief break for Supervisor Provenza and I can go to the Capitol to talk about a piece of legislation. That break will start around 10:30. We will be back a little after noon.

There is little chance that we will be meeting on Thursday - but it is on the schedule.

At the end of these hearings, I expect we will take a vote in concept for a final adoption in September.

American Idol 2009
Sunday, July 12, 2009 :: 0 Comments
Jenn and I went to Arco Arena for the third summer in a row to see the American Idol concert tour.

It was a well done event as always.  Couple things really stand out --

Adam Lambert just blew everyone away.  He is just a superior performer to the rest of the field by a mile.  We almost felt sorry for winner Kris Allen that came out right after Adam and stood in one place with a guitar.

Matt Giraud and Scott McIntyre did a great job on the dueling pianos. Matt  showed that he was more talented than the television show allowed him to display.

Great show.

Meeting on Tuesday - July 14th
Sunday, July 12, 2009 :: 0 Comments
Looked over my agenda for Tuesday.  This meeting should not last very long.

Jim Provenza will be very polite about TANC on agenda item 4.01 and then McGowan and I will make references to having someone do something objectionable on your lawn, declaring war, or hitting someone with a rake in the face.  These TANC people need to be hit very hard.

We have several items on CDBG monies.  This could be interesting if people are paying attention.

Item 4.07 is the planning principles between Woodland and Yolo County.

Item 4.09 is to buy the Bauer Building. This makes all the sense in the world. We will save transaction costs.

Chamberlain will adjourn in the memory of Jack Potter and PFC Cassillas.

Don't want to jonx it but I think this meeting should be pretty quick.
Backpacks for Kids

Yesterday was the 3rd Annual Backpacks for Kids Family Fun Day at Gibson Mansion.

It was a great day.  We had lots more people this year, raised more money, and should be able to do some good work with the backpacks.

Dotty, Dave, and the rest of the committee did a great job.  Thank you.

Mark Deven and Jim Smith spent an hour each in the dunk tank.  Thanks to them for being good sports.  In fact, thank you to their families for helping out as well.

This event is a ton of work but it was fun and we are blessed to have so many people help us.

Thank you to all the sponsors and all the volunteers.

Mural on Main Street
Wednesday, July 08, 2009 :: 0 Comments
Last Thursday night I watched the last part of the Planning Commission meeting regarding the proposed mural on Main Street.

As always Chairman David Sander did a great job running the meeting. I really do hope that he ends up serving on the City Council at some point in the future.

The bottom line for me is this --

1) It is private property
2) The mural is certainly within the guidelines of what is appropriate in our community
3) City government has no business selecting art

I could argue all day about the private property rights issues here but my real beef is the approval of art.  That is just wrong.

I may not like some art. In fact, I don't like lots of art. Further, I hope there is always some art I don't like so I can appreciate the good stuff.

There is no doubt that pornographic or racist art does not have a place in public display. However, my standard is not much higher than that.

Government should not be in the business of choosing art at all.  I am glad the Planning Commission made the decision they did even if it was for different reasons than I would have presented.

Manor Pool Davis
Wednesday, July 08, 2009 :: 2 Comments
I work quite a few hours every week. Last Friday the office was pretty dead. Jenn tells me that she is taking the kids to Manor Pool in Davis with some of her friends.  Asks me to come.

I had never been to Manor Pool and did not know where it was.  Well, I met them there and the pool is a great asset for Davis.

Well, props to the City of Davis. It is very well done.  Check out the pictures here.

This is what I liked about the place --

1) Lifeguards were very professional
2) I went off the high dive.  I did not do a flip but maybe next time.
3) The zero entry pool is perfect for Adam.
4) The gave Adam a life jacket to use so he jumped in from the edge of the pool 4,858,299 times.
5) The shaded area was great for parents to hang out in while they watched their kids.
6) The slide looked cool -- although the said I could not go down it.

This is a very well done facility.

Jenn and I are on a kick of finding television series that have been on for a while and watching whole seasons over the course of a week.

The latest one was a show I had not even heard of a month ago called Arrested Development.  We strongly recommend it.  Both of us enjoyed it.

We got seasons 1 and 3 from friends on DVD and watched season 2 on my laptop.  Great series that is one of the funniest we have seen.

Saturday -- bring your kids out to the Gibson House
Sunday, July 05, 2009 :: 0 Comments
On Saturday please bring your kids, grand kids, neighbors, family ..whatever to the Gibson House from 11-2pm.  You will find food, games, bounce houses, dogs chasing Frisbees, dunk tanks...you name it.

Please come on out.

Note: This is not where we pass out backpacks.  That will be during the month of August.  No matter how many times we repeat this people will still show up to get school supplies.

More information here.

The first year the committee was able to put this together in short order to get a couple hundred backpacks to deserving families.  Last year it was more like 950 backpacks.

This year it should go north of 1,000 for sure.  Each backpack with supplies is probably a $30 effort.

Dotty and the rest of the committee are doing good work here.

Governor Palin
Friday, July 03, 2009 :: 2 Comments
Governor Sarah Palin has not done herself, her party, female candidates, or her state any huge favor by entering into a series of actions that would have to be described as erratic behavior.

First, there is no way she can possibly be finished with her agenda in just 2.5 years when she spent a good chunk of that time working to be Vice President of the United States.  That just does not fly with me.

There are plenty of examples of elected officials have accomplished amazing things during their last year of office when not seeking re-election.  That is your chance to have the ball and make things happen without worry of any political factors at all.

Second, there is no way that resigning your only statewide office prior to completing your only term outside of being Mayor of a small city would put you in a better light to be President of the United States.  That is now completely off the table.

Third, the excitement that surrounded your candidacy because you were a fresh female conservative voice is not gone.  Further, your candidacy excited young women and allowed them to consider seeking office themselves due to her example. Not now. Those women don't want to use you as an example.

Finally, the speech today was terrible.  Matt Scully wrote an excellent speech for her at the National Convention.  It would have been hard for her to have done better.  Great presence.  Great message. Great delivery.  It was memorable.  After today when she walked up to the stage and rambled over a host of topics that will define her public appearances.  That is a lost opportunity.

So if this is going to be the way it is...fine. Let's move on.

It is too early at this time to know what options are available to TANC and Western Area Power Administration (Western).  During the month of July, the agencies will be identifying and evaluating options.  TANC and Western believe it is important to keep the “public scoping” period open during this time, and continue to strongly encourage interested parties to submit comments in writing to Mr. David Young at Western by July 30, 2009.
While SMUD’s decision is disappointing, it does not change TANC’s view of the fact that a transmission project like the TTP is needed to help ensure reliable and affordable electric service for the residents and businesses throughout northern California, and to expand access to clean energy sources such as solar, wind, and geothermal energy.
We will be in touch in the coming weeks to discuss our next steps. In the meantime, please feel free to email me or call Lauren Altschuh at (916) 852-1673 for more information.

Regards,

James Beck

.50 cal
Wednesday, July 01, 2009 :: 0 Comments
I have no idea why I am on the .50 cal in this picture.  This looks like Pineda's weapon.  When I was on the gun it was a Mark 19 most of the time.

The irrigation ditch in the back tells me that we were on the river near Babylon.

If I remember this right we had driven from Kuwait City to BIA (like 400 miles) -- and it was hot and nasty.  I think this one also includes my mustache -- that you really can't see.

This is Pineda, Schoon, and me at the airport. Not sure why we were there this time.  I think I might have my ill advised mustache at this point.

Lion King Picture

I just went over a bunch of pictures from almost six years ago.  I will share a couple with you that I am not sure I have ever really looked at before.

This is a family that was living in the wrong place.  The funny thing is that this kid was wearing a Lion King T-shirt.

So also notice how much bigger I am than that full grown man on the other side.  This was a common ratio.

Governor Sanford -- shut up.
Wednesday, July 01, 2009 :: 0 Comments
I wrote off Governor Sanford as soon as I heard he was gone for like five days.  That alone was irresponsible.

Then we found out the details.  Good grief what a disaster.

Now he just needs to shut up. I don't really care about him. He needs to be removed from office.

He is embarrassing his kids now. They are the ones suffering by his complete stupidity.

Just go away.  Leave office.  Resign. Don't run again. I don't care.  Just shut up.
Bottom Dwellers in Davis on Friday night -- with Uncle Bart on the drums
Wednesday, July 01, 2009 :: 1 Comments
I have told you all before that Jenn and I love the Bottom Dwellers.

She likes to watch and hear Adam.  I like watching Mark. Oh well.  The other guys seem cool too.

This Friday night in Davis my brother in law Bart will be on the drums. I don't have permission to leave the house yet -- but plan on attending.  Jenn and I (assuming I am allowed to attend) will be ignoring Adam and Mark in order to watch Bart. He is the bomb.

Show starts at 9pm at the G Street Pub.  Free admission.

Always a good show.  More on the Bottom Dwellers here.
One down -- a couple more to go

SMUD has pulled out of this TANC project that impacts Yolo County.  Now we need to turn our attention on the City of Redding and a couple other people that are still involved in the project.

See Sacramento Bee article here.  Good news for Yolo County.
Bob Schneider is right

See the letter below from Bob Schneider to SMUD.

I have not had a single person from Woodland or Elkhorn contact me about this issue. However, I am confident if they knew about TANC and the way this thing is set up they would be hacked off just like I am.
