Bobby Harris

I like Bobby Harris. I admire him for his determination and certainly respect his speaking ability. He is the best public speaker from Woodland I have seen........but that talent pool is not that deep with Xavier Tafoya and Art Pimentel in the mix.
Bobby is also one of the few people to actually attend meetings like 2x2s that I wish more people would attend sometimes. We share some Libertarian beliefs.
That being said we have several disagreements on the proper role of government.
The front page of the Democrat has an article today indicating that Bobby announced his candidacy for office during a public meeting. That is not right at all. Public comment is not an appropriate time to make political announcements. Not at all.
I don't see how Bobby is able to beat Davies or Marble in June. Skip is probably the most popular elected official in Woodland by a mile and Bill is up there too.
At this point however, I am not aware of anyone else running for City Council other than Bill, Skip, and Bobby.
The only thing I know for sure is that the debates will be worth watching although the outcome isn't really in doubt.

Tough Choices
Saturday, January 30, 2010 ::

I want a smaller more efficient government. Smaller is a big part of that. That means fewer people, lower taxes, and a lower level of service than what is currently provided.
This is all true.
That did not make it any easier on Tuesday to lay-off more than 40 people. That is 40 families that now do not have a check coming in and 40 families that face a great deal of uncertainty.
I voted in favor of the reductions and would do it again. It was the right thing to do -- but was not easy. There is no other way to balance the budget.
Here is the really tough thing. It is going happen again in a few months. Yolo County government has lost quite a few employees in the last two years and will probably lose quite a few more before the summer is over.
These are tough times in local government in California. Very tough.

Life or Death?

Last night I got a call from a Yolo County resident.
Caller --- I need to speak to you in person about a life or death matter.
Me --- Ok. Where do you want to meet? You can come to my house. I can come to yours, Whatever.
Caller -- I can't make it right now.
Me -- Ok. If you need time then meet me at the county office at 0630 tomorrow. I have a meeting at 0700. We can meet prior to that.
Caller -- Oh. That is too early. I cant make it.
Me -- (realizing this is now far from life or death). How about Friday afternoon?
Caller -- Sorry. I am going to be out of town.
Me -- How about the next week?
Caller -- I am really busy.
Me -- Ok. How about the next week?
Caller -- Well, let me check on a few things and get back to you.
Me -- Can you give me a hint on what you want to talk about?
Caller -- It can wait until we meet in person. I will let you know then. Talk to you later.
Me -- Good night.

So tonight Jenn made some home made rolls. When I asked for honey she pulled out this big bottle that looked like it would be a big mess. Jenn then pointed out that it was made in Woodland by Moonshine Trading. Well -- it was excellent.
Check out their website here.
This is really good stuff.

Marble and Davies both seek re-election
Sunday, January 24, 2010 ::

Mayor Davies sent this to me this morning.....
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Jan 22, 2010
For further information contact Mayor Skip Davies or Councilmember Bill Marble
Woodland Mayor Skip Davies and Councilmember Bill Marble have announced that they will both seek re-election to the Woodland City Council in June of 2010. First elected in 2006, both Marble and Davies have received the endorsement of every member of the Woodland City Council and the Yolo County Board of Supervisors.
In a joint statement, Davies and Marble said “We both love Woodland and sincerely appreciate the trust and confidence the community has placed in us these past 4 years. We would like the opportunity to continue the important work we have yet to do. These are tremendously challenging times for cities and we pledge our very best efforts to helping Woodland continue to be a great place to live.”
Each of the candidates has resided in Woodland for many years. Davies was raised in Marysville and moved to Woodland with his family in 1966. Marble grew up in Davis and moved with his family to Woodland in 1981.
Both Marble and Davies have long and successful careers outside the political mainstream and hold doctoral degrees. Davies was awarded an Ed. D. from Utah State University. His career in education spanned 41 years, serving the Woodland Joint Unified School District for 17 years and culminating in service as Deputy Chancellor for the Los Rios Community College District.
Marble earned a D.D.S. degree from Northwestern Dental School. Following service as a dentist in the Air Force, he began a dental practice in Woodland. He serves as an expert and an evaluator for the Dental Board of California and has held key appointments with dental associations at the local, state and national level.
Although both of their names will be on the June ballot, they do not see each other as opponents in the election. According to Marble, “Skip is exemplary as our mayor. He is attentive to every detail of government and devotes endless hours to the needs of our community and its individual citizens. He has been heavily involved in our Energy Committee with a strong focus on sustainability, as well as the Safe Routes to Schools efforts and the Clark Field rehabilitation. We are all the beneficiaries of his outstanding leadership. He is a great ambassador and spokesman for our community. It is important to me to do all I can to ensure he is re-elected.”
In commenting about his colleague, Davies stated, “Bill’s re-election is vital to our City Council. As Chairman of both the WRA and the Woodland-Davis Clean Water Agency, he has worked tirelessly to bring focus to water issues important to Woodland, the region and the state. Under his leadership we are making great strides in identifying an appropriate flood solution and providing quality drinking water for our community. Bill is extremely dedicated to serving our City and brings an effective focus to fiscal matters for the Council”
Marble said that “Woodland, like other cities, faces huge fiscal challenges in the years to come. The economy makes it imperative that we use taxpayer dollars in ways that are both fiscally responsible now and prudent for future generations. This is no easy task when revenues continue to trend downward. I have confidence that will reverse, but in the meantime, we are all feeling the pain.”
Said Davies, “This is a great community that knows how to pull together when times get tough. We united in a great cause to re-build Fern’s Park, an effort which saved the city a great deal of money and provided quality recreation to our children and youth. We need to pull together the same way to combat crime and violence while providing positive alternatives for our youth.”
Both Marble and Davies added, “It is tremendously important that individuals of integrity, skill and leadership step up to serve in elected office. We have done our best during the past 4 years to lend time and talent to the unique challenges we face in Woodland. We remain focused on increasing job opportunities, strengthening the local economy, the redevelopment in our downtown, the financial issues regarding the Spring Lake development and the challenges that face Woodland to provide the necessary public services with very limited resources. We intend to ask the voters to allow us to continue to serve.”

Farm Bureau

Last night Jenn and I went to the Farm Bureau Annual Meeting. We had to leave before Chuck Dudley spoke because we needed to relieve the babysitter.
The thing that stood out to me about the event was the chow. Buckhorn served the best meal I have ever had at a banquet like that. It was excellent. I even liked the carrots -- and I don't normally like carrots.

Yolo County Deputy Sheriffs Association
Thursday, January 21, 2010 ::

I got the call a few hours ago that the Yolo County Deputy Sheriffs Association unanimously endorsed my re-election tonight.
That is cool. I think they were the only organization four years ago (other than maybe the Yolo Democrat Central Committee) that did not endorse me.
Thanks. Did not expect this today.
Just got to keep plugging.

This video shows the winner of "Ukraine's Got Talent", Kseniya Simonova, 24, drawing a series of pictures on an illuminated sand table showing how ordinary people were affected by the German invasion during World War II. Her talent, which admittedly is a strange one, is mesmeric to watch.
The images, projected onto a large screen, moved many in the audience to tears and she won the top prize of about $130,000.00
She begins by creating a scene showing a couple sitting holding hands on a bench under a starry sky, but then warplanes appear and the happy scene is obliterated.
It is replaced by a woman's face crying, but then a baby arrives and the woman smiles again. Once again war returns and Miss Simonova throws the sand into chaos from which a young woman's face appears.
She quickly becomes an old widow, her face wrinkled and sad, before the image turns into a monument to an Unknown Soldier.
This outdoor scene becomes framed by a window as if the viewer is looking out on the monument from within a house.
In the final scene, a mother and child appear inside and a man standing outside, with his hands pressed against the glass, saying goodbye.
The Great Patriotic War, as it is called in Ukraine , resulted in one in four of the population being killed with eight to 11 million deaths out of a population of 42 million.
Kseniya Simonova says:
"I find it difficult enough to create art using paper and pencils or paintbrushes, but using sand and fingers is beyond me. The art, especially when the war is used as the subject matter, even brings some audience members to tears. And there's surely no bigger compliment."

Yesterday just sucked. Just after 0700 I found out that I good friend had died of a heart attack the night before. I then got buried in work stuff all day. Then I finished off the day with a trip to urgent care with Adam.
Let's hope today is better.
Go get 'em Woodland.

You ever feel like you are obligated to send someone an invitation but you really don't want them to come. That happened to me recently when I considered inviting Mike McGowan to my kick-off event.
Well, yesterday he said he had a conflict on the 28th. What a relief. Now we can have a real party.
Sometimes things just work out.

Budget
Wednesday, January 13, 2010 ::
Yesterday at the Board meeting we talked about the budget process. Erin Tracy captures the debate well in this article in the Daily Democrat today.
The budget this year is the most important issue we have. It needs to be all five of us doing the whole thing. If people have priorities then they need to share them with everyone.
If you value public safety -- then throw it right out there for everyone to see and consider. If you value some other part of the county budget then let's do it -- right out in the open so we can consider it with all the other options.

Steroids

The whole steroid thing is interesting to me. Clearly it is cheating in a game.
But what about the military? Is is cheating to have warriors amped up on 'roids? Not really cheating but not good for their health -- but then again neither is jumping out of an airplane or going into fire fights.
I have not seen anyone ever use steroids in the military but I know I was never tested for steroids. Instead the bottle was to test for recreational drugs.

When people say "I could care less" it drives me crazy. That means they care more. It makes no sense. The thing to say is -- "I couldn't care any less."
That means that if Dotty tells me she will be mad at me if I don't do something I can say "I couldn't care less." or it would be impossible for me to care any less about that than I do now.
So today I heard another one that caught my attention for the first time. "quote, unquote". If you were to say "The lady is a complete quote unquote nutcase." nothing is in the quotes. Instead I think it should be "The lady is a complete quote nutcase unquote." That means that nutcase has some sort of special meaning.
What say you?

Local Farming Stuff

I got two things for Christmas from local farms. Both were really tasty.
First, three people got me beef jerky. Good stuff. My favorite is the original from Yolo Land and Cattle. This stuff is great. Adam loves it too.
The second was a surprise. We got some assorted jams and jellies from Manas Ranch. This morning I finished off the Triple Berry on my toast. This is really good stuff. Really good. Here is their website.

Bella is sneaky

Last night when I went upstairs at around 9:30 pm Bella was standing on the table in the family room. She then spent the night sitting on my lap and then on Jenn's -- back and forth.
Abbie was thrilled to see her this morning.
I have never been so happy to see a cat.
We still have no idea where she was -- but I am good with her having a place for her to seek refuge from Adam.

Uhhh....we have a problem
Saturday, January 09, 2010 ::
Abbie got a cat for Christmas. Because we went skiing last week she basically got a gift certificate for a cat.
So last Saturday Abbie picked out a white cat in Vacaville. The cat got "fixed" on Tuesday and had a couple days of rest.
Well, today was the day. Abbie got her cat - Bella.. When I got home from work she was thrilled. The cat was not able to touch the ground. Pet the cat. Show the cat the upstairs. Show the cat the basement. See if Bella likes it on the couch. Stuff you would expect from a 5 year old girl.
So Bella eventually went to hide behind the file cabinet in my office. We talked Abbie into letting her hang out there as Bella got used to things. I went upstairs and fell asleep on the couch.
Now we have a problem. Bella is nowhere to be found. Nowhere. We have looked all over this house for that cat.
Abbie went to sleep tonight believing that Bella is sleeping somewhere. Who knows ..but I don't think that cat is in this house.
I need to find a cat for a five year old girl......

So this spending is hacking me off
Monday, January 04, 2010 ::

I consider myself to be a reasonable guy. Some of you think I am an extremist and that is fine.
So lately I am really focused on a few things that just need to be eliminated. Not reduced -- eliminated.
Here is the problem -- as soon as we try to eliminate something we find someone that claims this thing or program is terribly important to them. "Cut anything else but that."
Last year during the budget process I voted for one expenditure out of the Pomona Funds. One. This year I seriously doubt I will even vote for the Children's Health Initiative. Why? We can't afford this stuff.
Yolo County is struggling with the Williamson Act. We say it is very important but are basically saying the others things we are doing are more important. In the past few weeks I have concluded that we are going to have to do something dramatic to save the Williamson Act -- and it will not be reallocating money from the other programs to save it.
I actually want to eliminate the trapper, needle exchange program, master gardener program, smoking cessation programs, and a host of other things to save the Williamson Act. It is a questions of priorities.
In the next couple months I encourage everyone in Yolo County to watch out budget process and watch it closely. These are really important decisions that are allocating your tax dollars.

If Willie Brown is talking about it.....
Sunday, January 03, 2010 ::
Please don't miss the comments by Willie Brown on civil service in the Chronicle today.....
If we as a state want to make a New Year's resolution, I suggest taking a good look at the California we have created. From our out-of-sync tax system to our out-of-control civil service, it's time for politicians to begin an honest dialogue about what we've become.
Take the civil service.
The system was set up so politicians like me couldn't come in and fire the people (relatives) hired by the guy they beat and replace them with their own friends and relatives.
Over the years, however, the civil service system has changed from one that protects jobs to one that runs the show.
The deal used to be that civil servants were paid less than private sector workers in exchange for an understanding that they had job security for life.
But we politicians, pushed by our friends in labor, gradually expanded pay and benefits to private-sector levels while keeping the job protections and layering on incredibly generous retirement packages that pay ex-workers almost as much as current workers.
Talking about this is politically unpopular and potentially even career suicide for most officeholders. But at some point, someone is going to have to get honest about the fact that 80 percent of the state, county and city budget deficits are due to employee costs.
Either we do something about it at the ballot box, or a judge will do something about in Bankruptcy Court. And if you think I'm kidding, just look at Vallejo.

10 year ago last night I was in Austin, TX. It was a big party and I had a great time.

Met Jenn and married her
Two great kids
One big move but three houses (long story)
One Masters degree
One war
New church home
Good health
Leaving Marine Corps
Several new businesses (most all are still running and profitable)
Second bone marrow transplant and loss of bone marrow brother
One city council election
One Supervisor election
Hundreds of new friends all over the world
In the next ten years I hope to --
Grow in my own faith
Strengthen my marriage
Continue to raise Abbie and Adam as well grounded in God, academics, health and fun
Pay for college for both Adam and Abbie
Never stop learning
Write my book or books
Keep challenging myself professionally and personally

New Laws 2010

I had a nice conversation with Melody Stone from the Democrat about this article on new laws for 2010. Read it here.
The new law about the bicycle seat is just stupid. We should not be making exceptions to laws like that. The laws should be eliminated completely.
