Come on -- no more tax increases
Posted 7/8/2008 @ 9:39 PM :: 0 Comments |
California does not have a revenue problem. It is a spending problem.
This article in the Sacramento Bee tells me that a large portion of the Legislature does not get it.
Tax increases is not the answer. State revenues have increases dramatically over the past five years. Tax increases are not necessary. |

Posted 7/8/2008 @ 10:52 AM :: 0 Comments |
The people in Davis are probably organizing protests now. For the second most educated city in America they sure get all fired up. Woodland of course will be calm in the understanding of how things work.

MOSQUITO CONTROL CONSIDERS AERIAL SPRAYING
--Concern Grows Over Virus Activity in South Sacramento
Elk Grove, Calif.— The Sacramento-Yolo Mosquito and Vector Control District announced today that aerial spraying may be necessary to control mosquitoes in South Sacramento. In recent weeks, virus activity has increased with the finding of positive dead birds and multiple infected mosquito samples. “We’re very concerned about the increased activity in this area and we are evaluating our response” said David Brown, District Manager. Though no formal decisions have been made, it may be necessary as early as next week to begin aerial treatments to reduce the mosquito population and risk of West Nile virus transmission. The District continuously monitors the spread of West Nile virus and new information comes in on a daily basis. With extremely hot temperatures this week, the virus is expected to amplify in bird and mosquito populations causing additional concerns. “We know we’ll see an increase in mosquito populations and we want to be proactive in ensuring they won’t be a threat to the public,” said Brown.
“It is extremely important for residents to ensure they are not producing mosquitoes in their own yards, and protect themselves by wearing a repellent when mosquitoes are active.”
The District will continue to monitor the spread of West Nile virus through mosquito samples and dead bird reports. Once a decision has been made to proceed with aerial treatments, media will be notified immediately. The District asks for the cooperation of the media to alert the public and help keep them informed. Residents can subscribe to mailing lists to receive email notifications for mosquito treatments by zip code. To sign up, visit www.FIGHTtheBITE.net and go to Spray Notifications.

PRESS RELEASE—for immediate release
July 7, 2008
Contact Eric Dyer 530-681-0251 ericdyer@hotmail.com
On July 10th, Woodland Joint Unified School District and the agriculture programs at Woodland and Pioneer High Schools will celebrate the grand opening of the Laugenour Land Laboratory (LLL) on road 17A that has been in the works for the past 20 years. Eric Dyer, the coordinator of Career Technical Education programs for the school district states “we are excited that we have been able to realize our dreams through the support from the school district and community members”. The opening of this facility marks a milestone in the vision of the agriculture programs in the district.

The vision of this laboratory is to provide an extension of the agriculture curriculum through extensive “hands-on” experience in plant and animal sciences. The Laugenour Land Laboratory (LLL) will also give agriculture students the opportunity to have year-round projects at the facility. Having such a facility will increase in number of students who that have strong Supervised Agricultural Experience (SAE) projects. Since SAEs form one of three components of an agricultural education program, the Laugenour Land Laboratory will enhance agricultural education in Woodland Unified School District through hands-on teaching and strong SAE projects. Another purpose for the LLL, is to provide unique learning opportunities for students at all grade levels in the school district through field trips and class demonstrations.
The finished project should have two classrooms, at least three barns, show ring, bleachers, developed pasture, tree crops and a renewable energy unit.

Currently, the land laboratory has a newly completed large barn, pig barn, water supply and the entire property has been fenced. The current facility has the capacity to hold 32 pigs, 10 cattle, 28 sheep and 30 poultry projects. The 2.5 acres of pasture has also been developed for grazing purposes. The agriculture program received one hundred and fifty six thousand dollars ($156,000) for the completion of this first phase of the project. The Woodland Joint Unified School District agriculture educators would like to thank Steve and Terry Laugenour, Eaton Drilling, E. Center/ Migrant Head Start, Woodland Joint Unified School District, Yolo County Office of Education, Better Barns, Iron Horse Fabrication, the local Agriculture advisory committees, FFA boosters and community members who have made the dream a reality. The agriculture educators look forward to working with future donors to complete future phases of the LLL development project. |

Woodland Davis Bike Path
Posted 7/7/2008 @ 8:15 AM :: 0 Comments |
The effort to establish a Woodland-Davis Bike Path continues. The Woodland City Council brings up the issue on Tuesday to help fund their part of the program. Here is the article in the Democrat from this morning.
The County is going to bring up the issue at our next meeting. We will need to come up with the money to make this happen.
As we learn more about the funding available from the state and federal government it is clear to me that we just have to tee this thing up. When we get it there -- it will not be hard to knock this out of the park. This will fall into several different program possibilities in state and federal government. |
Sac Business Journal, hold the phone

So I set down my copy of the Sacramento Business Journal to take care of some things here in the office. Well, I had not gotten past page 6. Well, right there on the "Family Owned Business" section is Yolo County Farm Bureau President Tim Miramontes as a cover guy.
Yep -- Tim is right there on his John Deere.
The story is password protected but you can see Tim's picture here.
Then later on you can see a profile of Don and Bob Clark from Clark Pacific.
Yolo County is all over this edition. |
Sacramento Business Journal -- Shepards Close in Davis

I really enjoy the Sacramento Business Journal.
This week it has an article on page 6 about Shepards Close in Davis. This is an eco-friendly in-fill development at 7th and B. This is something I want to check out.
Here is the on-line article.
For me, the best part about the article is the costs that are attributed to some of the features. These are some things Jenn and I need to do in our old house. |
Senator Kerry on Face the Nation
Posted 7/6/2008 @ 10:37 PM :: 6 Comments |
I just watched Face the Nation from this morning. I have been kind of laughing off all these comments about Senator Obama changing his views on Iraq.
Well, now that I have watched General Wesley Clark and Senator John Kerry represent the Obama campaign in consecutive weeks I am sure an effort exists to unfairly discredit Senator McCain and his abilities as Commander in Chief. That is just silly.
Look -- I realize that many of you disagree with Senator McCain and will be looking to help elect someone else as President of the United States. Fine. Fair enough. What I don't think is right is to question if McCain understands international affairs or question his ability to command the military. That is just crazy. You many not agree with him on his conclusions but that man is qualified.
Senator McCain has more experience to command the military than any President to have been elected in the last fifty years. He is more experienced than Bush, Clinton, Bush I, Reagan, Carter, Ford, Nixon, Johnson, and Kennedy. In fact, I think he has more experience prior to be being elected than all of them combined.
Some things are just true. Obama is brilliant. Obama is a great speaker. All true. One thing that is also true is that Senator McCain is eminently qualified to be Commander in Chief. |
This week

We don't have a Board of Supervisors meeting this week. That moves me to tears -- of joy.
However, we do have an Yolo-Solano Air District Meeting on Wednesday. Agenda is here.
Tuesday morning the Workforce Investment Board meets. I have not been able to go to a meeting for a couple months because they are on the same say as Board meetings. That night we have kind of a Yolo County 101 for kids at the County.
On Friday I have out legislative call in the morning, lunch for the Woodlander of the Month, and then an afternoon at the county.
This is a pretty light week for county stuff.
Dotty and Dave will be working on Backpacks for Kids. It is getting close and they are putting on some finishing touches. Check out the latest here. |
Abandoned Cities

I was listening to a podcast tonight in the gym on abandoned cities. The piece was put together by the people at How Stuff Works.com. You can read a little about it here.
That brought me to a really cool website called ForgottenDetroit.com. I don't know much about Detroit but now I want to go there and check it out. |

Law Enforcement Memorial
Posted 7/6/2008 @ 4:45 PM :: 0 Comments |
I got an e-mail from the wife of a former Woodland Police officer. She brought up the lack of a Police Officers Memorial in Yolo County. If we have one I am not sure where it is. Do we have one?
She provided this link to something being done in Sacramento County.
I know of the following officers that have lost their lives on duty in Yolo County ---
Woodland Police Department -- Officer Laurence Sills. I believe this was a motorcycle accident.
CHP - Officer Stevens, the car accident on the I-5/113 interchange, Officers Blecher and Freeman that were murdered when I was in third grade, and Officer Ivan Casselman
Davis Police Department -- Officer Cantrill.
West Sacramento Police Department -- not aware of any. Thank God.
Winters PD - not aware of any. Thank God.
Yolo County Sheriff -- Deputy Diaz last month and Deputy Walter Leinberger in 1943.
I don't think I am the natural person to lead this effort but I do think a memorial would be appropriate. What do you think?
Here is some information on one that was done in Palm Springs. |
